Ordered To Eat The Enemy via Warren Ellis

Friday March, 14 2008 10:42 AM PDT

The head of Charles Taylor’s Liberian death squad is testifying at the Hague right now that African peacekeepers and even United Nations personnel were killed and eaten on the battlefield:

"Did Charles Taylor order you to eat people?" Griffith asked.

"Yes, to set an example for the people to be afraid," Marzah replied. He appeared unfazed by Griffith’s blunt queries, and responded in matter-of-fact tones to such questions as "How do you prepare a human being for the pot?"

Marzah then described the splitting, cleaning, decapitating and cooking of the corpse with salt and pepper. "We throw your head away," he said…

"Which ones taste best?" Griffith asked. "There was no alternative but to do it your own way," Marzah replied. Enemies, he was told, "are no longer human beings."

Mercury?s Shining Craters via Warren Ellis

Friday March, 14 2008 10:37 AM PDT

The two craters at the bottom of the frame are located in Mercury’s giant Caloris Basin, a thousand mile wide depression formed billions of years ago when Mercury collided with a comet or asteroid. For scale, the larger of the two is about 40 miles wide. Both craters have dark rims or "halos" and the one on the left is partially filled with an unknown shiny material. Credit: NASA

It?s The Sun via Warren Ellis

Friday March, 14 2008 07:17 AM PDT

The sun is shining, and all over England people are looking up and saying, “What the fuck is that thing in the sky? It BURNS!”

And I’m outside the pub, trying to wake up, as I have three stages of an animation project to finish and send today.

I’m on the 810 right now, not wishing to expose the laptop to spilled beer and fag ash. It continues to perform excellently, though, the laptop, with one exception. I can’t get it to connect to Second Life for more than fifteen seconds at a time. I’ve tried a couple of different viewers, and no luck. I suspect it’s down to the graphics card. So if you’ve messaged me inworld…well, I won’t be responding anytime soon.

The other thing I have to do today is reconfigure my message board, http://www.freakangels.com/whitechapel , a bit. Knocking out some of the less-used sections. I think we’re also looking at adding a dedicated music section and a dedicated sf section, at this point. I may also crack and add a comics section at some juncture. (Though I would still direct hopeful creators to http://www.panelandpixel.com)

I also need to start remembering to link to Whitechapel from here more often. Will typing this help me remember? Probably not.

Oh, almost forgot; if you go over to Velcro City today, you’ll find details of a collection of flash fiction by sf writers, released under Creative Commons and donating all its profits to the NSPCC. Nice one, Paul. Includes work by Gareth L Powell, the author of the terrific “Ack-Ack Macaque” story I mentioned a couple of months back.

You know, more people should send me video.

Back in a bit.
